I WAS WORKING IN A FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS,AND WAS ASSUALTED BY MY BROTHER AT WORK. I DIDNOT FIGHT BACK BECAUSE I WAS TOO SCARED TO DO ANYTHING. MY OTHER BROTHER FINALLY GOT HIM TO LET GO OF ME. IF HE HAD NOT BEEN THERE I AM NOT SURE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. I WAS TRYING TO CALL THE POLICE AND MY BROTHER TOOK THE PHONE. A POLICEMAN HAPPENED TO WALK IN AND I ASKED IF HE COULD HELP ME. HE TOOK THE INFORMATION AND SAID IF HE GAVE HIM A TICKET NOW THEN IT WOULD JUST CAUSE MORE TROUBLE. SO HE LEFT. I LEFT WORK. I WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH WHAT HAPPENED, BECAUSE I FELT HE HAD TO TAKE THE CONSEQUENCES FOR HIS ACTIONS, FAMILY OR NOT.I CALLED THE POLICEMANS SGT TO TELL HIM WHAT HAPPENED. HE SENT THE POLICEMAN BACK OUT TO TALK TO ME AGAIN AND TO TAKE PICTURES, SINCE I HAD BRUISES ON MY ARMS. HE THEN SAID HE WAS GOING BACK TO ISSURE A TICKET TO MY BROTHER AND HE WOULD CALL ME AFTERWARDS. HE THEN CALLED AND SAID NO TICKET WAS ISSUED BECASUE I WAS KICKING,YELLING, SCREAMING OBSCENTIES, AND TRYING TO SCRATCH HIM. HE SAID HE TALKED TO EVERYONE INVOLVED AND THEY HAD SAID THAT ALSO. THAT WAS A BOLD FACE LIE. I TOLD HIM TO TALK TO MY SISTER BECAUSE SHE WAS THERE ALSO,HE CALLED AND ONLY TALKED TO HER FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE POLICEMAN BELIEVED THE LIARS,INCLUDING A FIREMAN WHO WAS A WITNESS AND HE LIED ALSO.WHERE IS THE JUSTICE FOR ME ON THE LITTLE CRIMES THAT LEAD TO BIG CRIMES. HE GOT AWAY WITH ASSUALT AND WILL CONTINUE AS THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME HE HAS DONE THIS.

Editor’s note:

The Community Justice Center believes the key to unlocking the problems with our justice system is restoring control and voices to victims. A victim tends to get lost in the shuffle of police, lawyers, judges and court rooms. Their questions don’t get answered and their story becomes nothing but yesterday’s crime.

Offenders become nothing but criminals doing time on holiday. Most never take full responsibility for the damage they have done. They don’t get a chance to feel the victim’s pain and try to make amends, even if that is all they can do. The victim has the key to getting across to offenders. Offenders need to understand the extreme gravity of the harm they put upon the victim and the community.

A major part of the Community Justice Center (CJC) is elevating victims voices so they are heard all while restoring a clear sense of control back. Through CJC victims begin the healing process and offenders know true accountability while learning about the true harm they caused real individuals and communities because of their actions.
