Hi, I am 42 years old and a single mom. There as a shooting on my street recently. Myself, my children or my house was not harmed in this shooting, however I am very concerned for the safety of my children, especially since their bedrooms face the street. A stray bullet could of gone through the house into their bedroom. I am extremely grateful that this did not happen. I am now worried about their safety while they sleep. I may have to switch rooms with my son so he is not sleeping close to the street.
I feel that the ones that were involved in the shooting should be held accountable for their actions. There could have been many injuries or deaths from stray bullets. Some type of correctional institution is necessary, depending on the age of shooters.

I know I will be much more nervous being outside now, especially in my front yard at night. My neighbors may feel the same. Loud noises will probably make my jumpy. In time, I’m sure I will let my guard down, but for know I will much more alert to what is going on in my neighborhood to help protect my family and neighbors.

Editor’s note:

The Community Justice Center believes the key to unlocking the problems with our justice system is restoring control and voices to victims. A victim tends to get lost in the shuffle of police, lawyers, judges and court rooms. Their questions don’t get answered and their story becomes nothing but yesterday’s crime.

Offenders become nothing but criminals doing time on holiday. Most never take full responsibility for the damage they have done. They don’t get a chance to feel the victim’s pain and try to make amends, even if that is all they can do. The victim has the key to getting across to offenders. Offenders need to understand the extreme gravity of the harm they put upon the victim and the community.

A major part of the Community Justice Center (CJC) is elevating victims voices so they are heard all while restoring a clear sense of control back. Through CJC victims begin the healing process and offenders know true accountability while learning about the true harm they caused real individuals and communities because of their actions.
